By using CognateSource, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the service. We may update these terms occasionally, continued use means you accept any changes.

What CognateSource is

CognateSource is a free, community-powered linguistic reference. Content is provided for educational and research purposes. We make no guarantee that all etymological data is complete or error-free, language history is complex and scholarly consensus evolves.

Submitting content

  • By submitting a word, you grant CognateSource a perpetual, royalty-free licence to display and use that content.
  • Submissions must be accurate to the best of your knowledge. Do not submit false, misleading, or harmful content.
  • All submissions are reviewed by an admin before publication. We reserve the right to edit or reject any submission.
  • Do not submit content that infringes copyright or contains hate speech, slurs used as slurs, or personal information about others.

Acceptable use

  • Use CognateSource for personal, educational, and research purposes.
  • Do not scrape, crawl, or mass-harvest the site in ways that damage its performance.
  • Do not attempt to access admin areas, databases, or any part of the system you are not authorised to use.

CognateSource is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. We are not liable for any errors in the linguistic data, or for any loss arising from your use of the service.

Attribution

Etymology data is sourced from Wiktionary (CC BY-SA), the Free Dictionary API, and AI language models. If you use CognateSource content in published work, please attribute accordingly.
